"I didn't want to come to school today."
Mira said quietly. Unusually, she was speaking on her own.
Hiyori asked gently. "Did something happen?"
Mira shook her head. "Nothing in particular. But I wanted to escape from everything."
Leo listened seriously.
"The desire to escape is not shameful," Hiyori said.
"But I'll be seen as weak," Mira said softly.
Leo intervened. "That's a misunderstanding. Escape is a biologically natural response."
"Natural?"
Hiyori explained. "Fight-or-flight response. An instinctive coping method for stress."
"When feeling danger, the brain prepares two options."
Leo supplemented. "Fight or flee. Both are survival strategies."
Mira listened quietly.
"The problem is," Hiyori continued. "Modern society has few real dangers."
"But the brain makes the same response. Exams, relationships, presentations."
"Not life-threatening, yet fight-or-flight response occurs."
Mira asked. "So that's why I want to escape?"
"Yes," Leo answered. "Your brain is trying to protect from stress."
Hiyori said gently. "Escaping is sometimes the right choice."
Mira was surprised. "Right?"
"Yes," Hiyori asserted. "There's adaptive avoidance and maladaptive avoidance."
"What's the difference?"
Leo explained. "Adaptive avoidance is protecting yourself from truly harmful situations."
"For example, leaving an abusive relationship. Resting when about to collapse from overwork."
Hiyori continued. "Maladaptive avoidance is escaping from growth opportunities."
"Avoiding situations that are fearful but manageable."
Mira thought. "How do I distinguish?"
"Difficult question," Hiyori admitted. "Ask yourself."
"'Is this situation truly dangerous?' 'How will I feel after escaping?'"
Leo supplemented. "Short-term relief or long-term regret?"
Mira said quietly. "If I escaped today, I think I would have regretted it."
"So I came."
Hiyori smiled. "That's courage."
"But," Mira continued. "I can't always fight."
"You don't need to fight," Leo said. "There's a third option."
"Third?"
"Not fight or flee, but face it," Hiyori explained.
"Recognize stress and cope appropriately."
Leo gave an example. "Afraid of exams. Fight = force studying. Flee = abandon exam."
"Face = acknowledge fear and prepare systematically."
Mira understood. "Don't deny emotions, choose actions."
"Perfect," Hiyori said.
"But," Mira asked. "There are days I can't face it."
"That's okay," Hiyori answered. "You don't need to cope perfectly every day."
Leo added. "Sometimes escaping to recover energy is necessary."
"Strategic retreat."
Mira laughed a little. "Escaping is also strategy."
"Yes," Hiyori nodded. "What's important is understanding your choice."
"Why you want to escape, what happens after escaping."
Leo said finally. "Having days you want to escape is human."
"But choose consciously, not blindly escape."
Mira said quietly. "I'm glad I came today."
Hiyori smiled. "That was the choice to face it."
The three sat quietly. Acknowledging the desire to escape is actually the first step to facing it.
Outside the window, wind blew. There are days to escape, days to fight, days to face. That's life.
