"What were we talking about?"
Riku suddenly asked.
Yuki and Aoi looked at each other.
"I think we started with entropy..." Yuki tried to remember.
"Then it became about coding," Aoi continued.
"So what are we talking about now?"
"Forgot," the three laughed simultaneously.
Aoi opened a notebook. "This is a Markov chain."
"Markov chain?" Yuki showed interest.
"A process where states transition probabilistically. The next state is determined not by entire past history, but only by current state."
Riku thought. "Conversation is like that?"
"Not completely, but close," Aoi explained. "Conversation flow depends on the immediately preceding topic."
"True," Yuki agreed. "If we say 'entropy', next likely becomes 'uncertainty' or 'information content'."
"That's transition probability."
Riku drew a diagram on the whiteboard. "Arrow from Topic A to Topic B."
"Yes. Each arrow has a probability."
Yuki asked. "But are we really forgetting the past?"
"Good question," Aoi acknowledged. "Real conversation is more complex."
"Higher-order Markov chain. Depends on the previous N states."
Riku understood. "Depth of memory."
"Yes. Humans remember several steps back. But not forever."
Yuki took notes. "Finite memory."
"That's the essence of Markov property," Aoi continued. "Not complete history, but summarized state."
Riku thought of another example. "Then our friendship too?"
"Maybe a Markov chain," Yuki laughed.
"Today's interaction determines tomorrow's relationship."
Aoi supplemented. "But not completely forgotten. Important past is incorporated into current state."
"State definition is important."
Yuki thought. "What does state include?"
"Depends on design," Aoi answered. "Simply, current topic. Complexly, emotions, context, summary of past."
"Choice of state space changes model quality."
Riku became serious. "Then can we predict conversation?"
"To some extent," Aoi acknowledged. "But not perfectly."
"Why?"
"Because humans are creative. Intentionally deviate from predictable patterns."
Yuki smiled. "That's free will?"
"Information-theoretically, it looks that way."
Riku laughed. "I probably have many unpredictable transitions."
"High entropy transitions," Aoi acknowledged. "But that's interesting."
Yuki asked. "Where are Markov chains used?"
"Everywhere," Aoi answered. "Language models, recommendation systems, game AI."
"All fields that predict next from patterns."
Riku offered another perspective. "But sometimes I don't want to be predicted."
"Agree," Aoi nodded. "Completely predictable life is boring."
"So we inject randomness sometimes."
Yuki understood. "Balance between Markov chain and free will."
"Beautiful expression."
Riku summarized. "Conversation is: Depends on previous state (Markov property) But not completely predictable (creativity) Finite memory (summarization) Probabilistic transition (uncertainty)"
Aoi smiled. "Good summary."
Yuki closed her notebook. "Then what's the next topic?"
"Decided probabilistically," Riku laughed.
"But unpredictable."
Aoi stood up. "That's human-likeness."
Their conversation continues. Flowing like a Markov chain, sometimes in unexpected directions.
That's the richness of dialogue.
Outside the window, clouds change shape. Cannot predict the next shape.
But that's fine. Unpredictability makes the world beautiful.
