The Right to Question

Who should question what? Does qualification to question exist? Haru, Noa, and Simon debate.

"Should non-experts speak about specialized matters?"

Haru asked in the library.

"Specifically?" Noa inquired.

"Like healthcare policy. Should people who aren't doctors give opinions?"

Simon joined the conversation. "Interesting theme. The tension between expertise and democracy."

"Tension?"

"Should we respect expert judgment or reflect citizen opinions?" Noa explained.

Haru pondered. "Both are needed, but contradictory?"

"It seems so," Simon nodded. "But we can think hierarchically."

"Hierarchically?"

Ren approached. "May I join?"

"Please."

Ren organized. "Questions have levels. Technical questions and value questions."

"What's the difference?" Haru asked.

"Technical questions need expertise. 'Is this treatment effective?'"

Noa continued. "Value questions involve everyone. 'Who should we prioritize for treatment?'"

"I see," Haru understood. "Experts for medical efficacy, but society decides priorities?"

"Exactly," Simon smiled. "The wisdom of democracy."

"But isn't the boundary vague?"

Ren admitted. "It is. That's why discussion is necessary."

"So laypeople questioning experts?"

"Actually essential," Noa emphasized. "Expert accountability."

Haru was surprised. "Experts have an obligation to explain?"

"In democratic society, yes," Simon said. "Knowledge is power, so transparency is needed."

"But sometimes it's full of jargon we can't understand."

Ren pointed out. "That's the expert's responsibility. Inability to explain clearly might prove shallow understanding."

"Harsh."

"Einstein said, 'If you can't explain it to a six-year-old, you don't really understand it.'"

Noa added. "Though not everything can be simplified. Some learning is necessary."

"Citizens have responsibility to learn?"

"They do," Simon nodded. "Rights and duties come together."

Haru wrote in her notebook. "Citizens learn, experts explain."

"Good summary," Ren acknowledged.

"So are there wrong questions?"

Noa thought. "Difficult question."

"Questions with wrong premises exist," Simon answered. "'How many grams does a soul weigh?'"

"The premise that souls have weight is questionable."

"Yes. But questioning premises is also important."

Haru was confused. "So any question is okay?"

Ren organized. "If it's sincere, yes. Malicious or feigned ignorance is problematic."

"Malice?"

"Questions aimed at disrupting discussion," Noa explained. "Not constructive."

"Feigned ignorance?"

"Asking to embarrass someone when you know the answer," Simon added.

Haru nodded. "The motivation behind questions matters?"

"Motivation and subsequent attitude," Ren said. "Is there willingness to learn from answers?"

"Without willingness to learn, no right to ask?"

Noa answered carefully. "Qualification is a strong word, but question quality drops."

"Questions have quality?"

"They do," Simon stated. "Good questions deepen dialogue. Bad questions destroy it."

Haru asked seriously. "What's a good question?"

Ren gave examples. "Open-ended, prompts thinking, clarifies premises."

"Specifically?"

"'Why do you think so?' 'What other possibilities?' 'Does that always hold?'"

Noa added. "Questions that deepen understanding without attacking."

"Was my initial question good?"

Simon smiled. "Very good. It hit the core of expertise and democracy."

Haru smiled happily. "So I can ask more?"

"Of course," all three answered simultaneously.

"Does everyone have the right to question?"

Ren nodded. "Being human is the only qualification."

"But responsibility too?"

"Responsibility, or rather sincerity," Noa corrected. "Question sincerely, listen sincerely."

Haru stood up. "Got it. I'll ask lots of questions."

"Welcome to," Simon laughed.

Questioning voices echoed in the library. That's where thinking begins.
