Mira entered the club room. Even quieter than usual.
"Mira, are you okay?" Hiyori asked.
Mira nodded but didn't make eye contact.
Leo noticed. "Did something happen?"
Mira shook her head. But clearly something had happened.
"Don't want to talk?" Hiyori asked gently.
Mira didn't move. As if her heart had turned to stone.
Leo said quietly, "Your heart is closed."
"Heart closed?" Hiyori asked.
"It's a defense response called emotional shutdown. To protect yourself from intense emotional pain, you shut down your heart."
Hiyori sat next to Mira. "Mira, it's okay to be here. You don't have to talk."
Mira reacted slightly.
Leo continued, "Closing your heart is sometimes necessary self-defense."
"Defense?"
"Protecting yourself from emotional flooding. If you accept all emotions, your heart might break."
Hiyori understood. "So you close it temporarily."
"Yes. But when it becomes long-term, it's a problem."
Mira wrote in her notebook: "I can't feel anything"
Hiyori read, "Can't feel anything..."
"Emotional numbness," Leo explained. "To avoid pain, you shut down all emotions."
"Good emotions too?"
"Yes. Selective shutdown is difficult. So joy and sadness all become dull."
Mira nodded. There were no tears. Her emotions seemed frozen.
Hiyori asked, "How can she open up again?"
"Don't rush," Leo answered. "Forcing it open will cause more hurt."
"Then?"
"Wait until you feel safe. And practice opening up little by little."
Mira wrote questioningly in her notebook: "How?"
Leo thought. "With someone you trust, in a safe place, express emotions bit by bit."
Hiyori suggested, "This is a safe place."
Mira looked at Hiyori.
"We won't hurt you, Mira. Whatever you say, or don't say."
A little light returned to Mira's eyes.
Leo continued, "People who close their hearts have been deeply hurt in the past."
"Betrayed trust?" Hiyori asked.
"That too, and having emotions denied, ignored, or exploited."
"So they don't want to be hurt anymore..."
"Yes. Closing your heart was a smart survival strategy."
Mira wrote in her notebook: "But lonely"
"But lonely," Hiyori read.
"That's the dilemma," Leo said. "Closing your heart is safe. But lonely. Opening your heart is warm. But risks being hurt."
Hiyori said quietly, "When Mira opens her heart, I'll receive it gently."
Mira looked at Hiyori.
"I promise not to hurt you."
Leo added, "And when Mira wants to close, we'll respect that too."
Mira relaxed a little.
Hiyori gently reached out. "May I touch you?"
Mira nodded.
Hiyori gently held Mira's hand. Warm.
One tear fell from Mira's eye. Her emotions began to thaw, just a little.
"It's okay to cry," Hiyori whispered.
Mira cried quietly. No sound. But emotion began to move.
Leo watched quietly.
After a while, Mira wrote: "Thank you"
"You're welcome," Hiyori smiled.
Leo said, "Opening your heart is a gradual process. You don't have to rush."
"Little by little, little by little," Hiyori agreed.
Mira wrote in her notebook: "I'll try"
"That's enough," Leo nodded.
The three sat quietly. Mira's heart wasn't completely open yet. But a small gap had formed.
Light began to enter through it.
Closing your heart is sometimes necessary. But having the courage to open it again is also important.
