"Want to forget."

Mira was just staring at her notebook in the library.

Sora sat next to her. "What?"

Mira wrote. "Embarrassing memory. Remember it repeatedly. Want to forget but can't."

Hiyori approached. "That's painful."

Leo brought a book. "Intrusive thoughts. Psychology of unwanted memories."

"Intrusive thoughts. Psychology of unwanted memories," Sora translated.

Mira asked. "Why can't I forget?"

Sora explained, "The brain strongly remembers emotional events. Especially those related to shame or fear."

Hiyori supplemented, "Evolutionarily, remembering danger was advantageous for survival."

Leo said. "But memory is not perfect recording. It changes each time we recall."

"But memory isn't a perfect recording. It changes each time we recall."

Mira wrote. "So there's a way to forget?"

Sora answered carefully, "Actually, trying intentionally to forget backfires."

"What?"

Hiyori explained, "There's a white bear experiment. When told 'don't think about a white bear,' you think about it more."

Leo supplemented. "Thought suppression paradox. Trying not to think makes you think more."

"Thought suppression paradox. Trying not to think makes you think more."

Mira was confused. "Then what should I do?"

Sora suggested, "Paradoxically, accept it."

"Accept?"

"Acknowledge that the memory exists. Don't resist."

Hiyori gently explained, "Instead of fighting 'I want to forget,' observe 'This memory is here now.'"

Leo said. "Mindfulness approach. Observe without judgment."

"Mindfulness approach. Observe without judgment."

Mira tried. "There's an embarrassing memory. That's it?"

"That's it," Sora nodded. "Having a memory and being controlled by it are different."

Hiyori continued, "Memories are just thoughts. Like passing clouds."

Mira wrote. "But so vivid. Like it's happening now."

"That might be close to a flashback," Sora said.

Leo explained. "Traumatic memories encoded differently. More vivid, more emotional."

"Traumatic memories are encoded differently. More vivid, more emotional."

Hiyori asked, "Is that memory trauma-level?"

Mira thought. "Don't know. But very embarrassing, and I remember it repeatedly."

Sora explained, "Shame memories are especially prone to being intrusive. Because they threaten self-evaluation."

"How do you cope?"

Hiyori suggested, "There's a method called memory reconstruction."

"Reconstruction?"

"Recall the memory and add a new perspective."

Leo supplemented. "Narrative therapy. Retell the story with compassion."

"Narrative therapy. Retell the story with compassion."

Mira asked. "How?"

Sora explained, "View yourself at that time as a third person. Objectively, kindly."

Hiyori added, "'My past self did their best. There were things they didn't know.'"

Mira wrote. "But I really did something embarrassing."

"Feeling embarrassed and being worthless are different," Sora said.

Leo said quietly. "Everyone makes mistakes. Shame keeps us stuck. Self-compassion frees us."

"Everyone makes mistakes. Shame keeps us stuck. Self-compassion frees us."

Mira thought. "Self-compassion?"

Hiyori explained, "Treating yourself as you would a friend. Not harshly criticizing, but kindly understanding."

Sora added, "'It was hard then. But now is different. I've grown.'"

Mira slowly wrote. "Back then, I didn't know. Now, I could do it differently."

"Exactly," Hiyori smiled.

Leo continued. "Time doesn't erase memories. But it can change their meaning."

"Time doesn't erase memories. But it can change their meaning."

Mira asked. "I can never completely forget?"

"Probably," Sora answered honestly. "But you can weaken the memory's power."

Hiyori explained, "You'll remember less often. When you do remember, the emotional intensity will be less."

Mira wrote. "How long does it take?"

"It varies," Sora answered. "Sometimes months, sometimes years."

Leo added. "But each time you face the memory with compassion, it weakens."

"But each time you face the memory with compassion, it weakens."

Mira took a deep breath. "Face it without running."

"Yes," Hiyori acknowledged. "But you don't have to carry it alone."

Sora said, "If intrusive thoughts interfere with your life, consider professional help."

Mira nodded. "For now, I'm okay. But I'll remember."

Leo stood up. "Forgetting is not the goal. Peace with memory is."

"Forgetting is not the goal. Peace with memory is."

Mira wrote. "Want to forget but can't. But that's okay."

"That's okay," Hiyori said gently.

Sora added, "Memories are part of the past. But they don't define the present."

Mira smiled slightly. "Now, I'm here."

"Yes," the three acknowledged.

Quiet understanding spread through the library. Even unforgettable memories will someday become just memories. Believing that, living today.
