Beyond Entropy

Entropy keeps increasing. But there's beauty in that process. And we keep learning today too.

"A year ago, I knew nothing about information theory."

Yuki murmured in the club room.

Aoi, Riku, Mira, and Professor S were gathered. The usual after school.

"And now?" Aoi asked.

"Entropy, mutual information, channel capacity... I'm gradually understanding."

"But," Riku said, "there's still so much we don't know, right?"

"That's the essence of learning," the professor said quietly.

"The more you understand, the more the unknown expands."

Mira nodded. "Entropy of knowledge increases"

"Knowledge entropy increases?" Yuki asked.

"Meaning possibilities expand," Aoi explained.

"The more you learn, the more choices increase."

The professor supplemented. "But it doesn't increase chaotically."

"It's structured knowledge."

Yuki looked back at her notebook. A year's worth of learning.

"Everything relates to entropy."

"Thermodynamics, information theory, statistical mechanics, machine learning."

Aoi said, "Entropy is the concept that connects everything."

"But," Riku asked, "if entropy keeps increasing, what happens at the end?"

"Heat death," the professor answered. "The theoretical endpoint."

"Isn't that scary?"

"No," Mira said softly. "Beautiful process"

"The process is beautiful?" Yuki asked.

"Yes," Aoi continued. "In the process of entropy increasing, complex structures emerge."

"Life, consciousness, civilization."

"They all appear during entropy increase."

The professor drew a diagram on the blackboard.

"Locally, we can reduce entropy. But overall, it increases."

"Our learning, our growth."

"That's local entropy reduction."

Yuki understood. "But as compensation, surrounding entropy increases."

"Eating, breathing, metabolism."

"All use energy and disorder surroundings."

Riku laughed. "We're part of entropy."

"More precisely," Aoi corrected, "one expression of entropy increase."

Mira showed her final note.

"We are patterns in entropy flow"

"Patterns in the flow of entropy," Yuki translated.

The professor nodded. "Beautiful expression."

"We're part of the universe's complexification process."

"Thinking that way, existence itself has meaning."

Yuki looked out the window. The sunset was fading.

"Today too, entropy increased."

"But we learned."

Aoi smiled. "That's what matters."

"Entropy increases. But in that process, we grow."

Riku stood up. "Then tomorrow, shall we increase it again?"

"Entropy?"

"No, knowledge."

Everyone laughed.

The professor said finally. "Entropy isn't an end, but a beginning."

"Amid increase, new things are born."

"So the future is open."

Mira said quietly. "See you tomorrow, in higher entropy"

"See you tomorrow in higher entropy," Yuki translated.

"Good words," Aoi said.

"Tomorrow is more complex than today, richer than today."

The five left the club room.

Entropy keeps increasing. But that's not the end.

Rather, it's a beginning. New possibilities, new learning, new relationships.

Everything blooms amid entropy increase.

Yuki looked up at the sky. Stars were beginning to shine.

"Beyond entropy."

Someone murmured. Yuki, Aoi, or perhaps the universe itself.

The answer is unknown. But that's fine.

Because uncertainty is the source of entropy.

And their story continues. Toward tomorrow's higher entropy.
